The Regency Chess Company Reviews:
This set of hand-painted themed chessmen perfectly captures the spirit of Robin Hood and his band of men.
Traditionally portrayed as being adorned in Lincoln green, Robin Hood was known in English folklore as a heroic outlaw, robbing the rich to give to the poor.
Alongside his band of Merry Men, Robin Hood became a popular figure in the late medieval period and to this day continues to be widely represented in films, television and literature.
Romantically portrayed as ‘Errol Flynn’s version, the Robin Hood king in this set is superbly detailed with his bow, quiver and sword. He even bears a dagger, tucked into his belt. Maid Marian is at his side in a long flowing cream gown, whilst a ferocious King John looks on.
The bishop could be played by no other than Friar Tuck, comically portrayed with a staff and mug of ale in hand and a lamb at his feet. The Merry men and the castle guards make up the knights and the pawns on both sides. Each piece is beautifully decked in its Lincoln Green and chain mail.
The rooks are beautifully ornate, portrayed as trees with little dwellings hidden in them for the men of Sherwood Forest, and as majestic castles for King John. Without a doubt, each piece is an ornament in its own right. We would recommend a board of approximately 40 cm. Our 15.75-inch walnut and maple board matches these pieces beautifully.
