Backgammon is a two-player board game played with counters and dice. It's one of the oldest known board games, with origins tracing back over 5,000 years. The game evolved through various cultures, including the Persians, Romans, and Egyptians. Early forms of backgammon include:
After the game spread to Europe in the Middle Ages, it became known as "Tables".
We understand that there's not a one type suits all when it comes to finding the perfect backgammon board, which is why we offer a range of sets to provide something for everyone.
In the early days of Regency Chess, our scope of backgammon boards was focused on travel sets. These are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry around for playing on the go. Made from materials that can withstand being jostled in luggage or bags such as Alder and Birchwood, they also come with built-in storage for counters, dice and cups, ensuring that all components stay organised and secure.
Over the years we set our sights on expanding the array of backgammon sets, which is when the addition of the economy and luxury sets were introduced to our website. Our economy range is great for beginners or casual players who want to enjoy the game without committing to a high-end purchase, but still provide an excellent choice for quality and design.
Our luxury backgammon sets allows players to own something that's not only functional, but also a decorative piece. These sets are made from high-end materials such as wood veneers and fine inlays, with exceptional craftmanship and attention to detail, often handcrafted by skilled artisans.
We also supply backgammon stones in a variety of colours for those who seek to add a personal touch to their game, or those who want something a little special; this offering is extended with the addition of solid wood and faux leather dice cups that are sold separately.

Our backgammon sets are mostly made in one of two places, the first being from our friends at Manopoulos in Greece, using traditional art techniques and exquisite craftmanship so that each game set is different from the other.
Secondly, from the expert craftsmen at Dal Negro, who strive to provide the best gaming experience with refined design and quality materials, innovating in modernity but always with an eye towards tradition.
The difference between these types lies in the materials and manufacturing processes used.
Veneer
A veneer playing surface, also referred to as inlaid, is made from thin slices of real wood or high-quality wood composites. Veneers offer a more luxurious and authentic look, showcasing the natural grain and texture of the wood.
Printed surfaces are usually made from synthetic materials, such as plastic or vinyl, with the design printed directly onto the surface. This allows a little more variety with design and colour, and the surfaces are very smooth and durable.
Faux Leather
The other commonly used material for backgammon surfaces is faux leather, which is made from a synthetic material designed to mimic the appearance and texture of real leather. This material offers a durable playing field with high stain and scratch resistance, generally requiring less maintenance than genuine leather. These surfaces are usually cut and inlaid to produce intricate designs.
Whilst we do not offer this service, for those who would like to personalise their backgammon sets, we recommend using a metal plaque with an engraving on to attach to the outside of the set using a suitable glue. We would not advise engraving directly onto the set, as most are made from a veneer construction, which may cause a problem when trying to engrave.

Yes, all of our backgammon sets come with a two-year warranty.
There are two things to consider when purchasing a new set of backgammon stones. First and foremost, if you are replacing an existing set, you'll need to measure the diameter and thickness of your current stones to ensure a proper fit. Standard sizes range from 1.25 inches to 1.75 inches in diameter.
Second, you'll want to consider your personal preference when it comes to the colours and materials of the backgammon stones. Solid coloured stones are easy to match with any board design, swirled or marbled adds aesthetic appeal and uniqueness to the set, glossy stones are easy to clean whilst matte are less prone to showing wear and tear and provide a classic look.
