Dating from the 8th century BC, the city-state of Rome rose to power and subsequently gave its name to the incredibly advanced, powerful and sophisticated Roman Empire. The Romans expanded into one of the largest empires in the ancient world and evolved from a monarchy, to a classical republic and on to become an autocratic empire the likes of which the world has not seen, before or since.
