Daniel Harrwitz, born in Germany in 1821, was an established chess player during his time. Renowned for his reputation (especially in Paris) as a player of blindfold games, he played the likes of Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy during his time. He withdrew during his game with Morphy with a claim of ill health and subsequently retired. He died in Bolzano in 1884 just 62 years of age.
Unique yet still very traditional are the Harrwitz Black and Antiqued Chess Men. Each piece is painstakingly turned then expertly carved from high quality boxwood to create this exceptional set of luxury chess men.
The darker pieces are put through an ebonising process that seeps deep into the hardwood, the light pieces have been antiqued. Both processes give the colours a very professional finish, whilst also further protecting the wood. This superb set of chess men will last for many years.
The King at 8.89 cm (89 mm) along all the pieces are weighted and have a base layer of felt to ensure your board is protected. These pieces will ideally sit well on a board of approx 50.80 cm.
These reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King's side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king's rook'.
