The name Harrwitz is in memory of Daniel Harrwitz who was born in Germany in 1821. An established chess player during his time, he was also renowned for participating in blindfold games. He competed against the likes of Howard Staunton, Adolf Anderssen and Paul Morphy during his time. He withdrew during his game with Morphy with a claim of ill health and subsequently retired. In 1884, he passed away at just 62 years of age.
Unique yet still very traditional are the Harrwitz Black and Antiqued Chess Men. Each chess piece is painstakingly turned then expertly carved from high quality boxwood to create this exceptional set of luxury pieces.
To create the darker pieces, the boxwood is put through an ebonising process that seeps deep into the hardwood, in contrast, the light pieces have been antiqued. Both processes give the colours a very professional finish, whilst also further protecting the wood. This exceptional set of chess men will last for many years.
These reproduction pieces also bear the original markings of the kings crown on 1 black knight, 1 black rook, 1 white knight and 1 white rook and these pieces will sit on the Kings flank. This was a practical innovation to identify their position on the King's side of the board. This is because, in descriptive chess notation, the rooks and knights were often referred to as being the ‘queens knight, or the ‘king's rook'.
The 8.89 cm (89 mm) King, along with all the other pieces, is weighted and have a base layer of felt to ensure your board is protected. Because of their size, we have selected the 50.04 cm Black Anegre and Maple board. This stunning board has been crafted by the renowned Rechapados Ferrer board makers based in Spain. The precision workmanship along with the quality veneers and high gloss finish make this a beautiful playing field and reflect the chess pieces perfectly.
